Hard water at home: three fixes, from renter-friendly to whole-house

Spotty glasses, crusty faucets, soap that leaves a film. Here's how to spot hard water, how to check your own, and what a water softener and reverse osmosis (RO) each actually do, with a few Waterdrop picks for homeowners and renters.

The three kinds of fix covered below. Product photos are from Waterdrop.

What hard water is, in plain terms

Hard water carries a lot of dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. The USGS calls hardness a nuisance rather than a health concern. It also says hardness varies throughout the United States, so the only way to know about your own tap is to check.

Signs you might have hard water

Some people also say their skin or hair feels different after washing in hard water, and the USGS describes soap leaving a film of residue on your hands. Treat that as a comfort issue, not a medical one. These signs are clues, not proof. The only way to know your hardness is to check.

How to check your own water

The USGS uses these general categories, measured as calcium carbonate:

Hardness (mg/L as calcium carbonate)Classification
0 to 60Soft
61 to 120Moderately hard
121 to 180Hard
More than 180Very hard

Softener vs. RO: what each one does

Water softener (whole house)Installed where water enters the home. It reduces the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, so every tap, shower, and appliance gets softened water.
Reverse osmosis (one tap)Filters the water you drink and cook with, either under the sink with its own faucet or in a countertop unit you fill. It doesn't soften the rest of the house.

They solve different problems, so many homes use both: a softener for the house and RO at the kitchen sink. A whole-house carbon filter (like the WHF3T-PG below) is a third thing again. It targets chlorine and sediment, not hardness.
